Ethiopian Rebels Allege Gov’t Artillery Shelling Killed 5, Wounded 21 Others In A Church

Toronto – Amhara Fano National Movement (AFNM) on Saturday said government forces shelled a church in Amhara Saynet, Amhara region of Ethiopia. 

Five civilians were killed and twenty one others wounded.

Abebe Fantaw, Partnership & Cooperation Directorate of AFNM, shared on his social media page that the attack took place on Saturday in the morning. From what he wrote, the five civilians were killed inside Taeke Negest Atronse Mariam Church.

Three deacons and an abbot of the monastery were killed. The conditions of those wounded are said to be very serious.  The names of those killed and wounded are shared on social media.

Fano forces allege that the church was deliberately targeted as it has collections of historical documents and many theology students are based there. “It is part of the strategy to weaken the church, ” Ethiopian rebels allege. 

There had been times when government forces took their operations in church grounds since the fighting against Fano forces officially started in August 2023. 

Meanwhile, sources covering the conflict in the region are reporting that there was heavy fighting between Fano and the defense force in North Gojjam. 

“Amhara War Update” group reported that 97 government soldiers were killed on March 6  in North Mecha. 32 government soldiers were captured during the operation, according to the source. 

Furthermore, Fano forces are said to have seized 52 AK 47 and a Bren Machinegun.  The reports are not independently verified. 

Earlier this week, Fano forces claimed that they have killed 132 government soldiers in Gojjam. The government made counter claims at the same time saying it has killed “over 200 extremists” within a week.
