EPRP Holding Its Public Meeting This Saturday In Addis Ababa

Toronto – The Ethiopian People’s Revolutionary Party (EPRP) has confirmed that its  public meeting will take place in the capital Addis Ababa as planned. 

Last week the party announced that it is holding the meeting on December 6 starting at 8 a.m. local time. It will be taking place at Hotel d’Afrique in the Mexico area of the city.

The party is urging residents of Addis Ababa to remove the veil of fear (against the ruling party) and take part in the meeting.

“Let Addis Ababa speak!” is the theme of the meeting. 

It appears, based on recent remarks from Abraham Haymant, president of the party, EPRP approached several other hotels in the city to book a meeting hall. But many of them declined for fear of reprisals from Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s ruling party. 

Peaceful protest and organizing meetings are constitutional rights. However, opposition parties have been under pressure of the past few years to carry out party related activities due to government repressions. In November 2023, opposition party leaders who attempted to organize anti-war protests in the capital Addis Ababa were detained. 

EPRP has been one of the major opposition political parties making headlines for its political advocacy on a range of issues.  It is a member of Coalition for Ethiopian Unity. 

The party says, as is the case with few other opposition parties, that “Ethiopia is in a dangerous situation.” 

An end to the ongoing devastating conflicts in the Amhara and Oromia regions, the security crisis in the country, unending attacks targeting civilians in some parts of the country and the unbearable cost of living are some of the issues that the party has been actively opposing over the past few years.
