Toronto – Ambassador Hu Changchun, China’s Special Envoy to the Horn of Africa, on Friday met with Eritrean President Isaias Afeworki.
Their meeting was at the Denden Guest House in Asmara, in the afternoon, Eritrea’s Minister For Information Yemane Gebremeskel disclosed about it in a message he shared on X.
The president is said to have expressed his country’s readiness “to consolidate its constructive engagement with the People’s Republic of China.” The special envoy on his part reportedly expressed China’s “readiness” to strengthen existing bilateral strategic relations with Eritrea for shared benefit.
The president sees that it is “imperative for a more prominent role of China in various global and regional matters in these tumultuous times of heightened turmoil and instability,” as cited by Yemane GebreMeskel.
He also sees a role for China in Africa’s development and utilization of its resources.
The special envoy’s working trip to Eritrea came a week after Ethiopia’s Ministry of Finance and governor of the national bank of Ethiopia led a delegation to China pursuing cooperation in the finance sector – including debt restructuring.
Finance to the $10 billion mega airport project in Debre Zeit was also an agenda item in the meeting between Ethiopia and China.
Ethiopia has also been approaching China hoping for mediation in the dispute with Eritrea as the former is seeking access to the Red Sea. Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed unveiled it during one of his parliamentary appearances in 2025. There has been no confirmation from China if there is any mediation effort as two countries have been on the brink of war for several months now.
Eritrea rejects what it sees as “intervention” on the issue of access to the sea to Ethiopia. China has a powerful economic leverage over Ethiopia but not as much on Eritrea except a diplomatic one.
