AFNM forces report capturing multiple towns and hundreds of government troops in coordinated offensives near Addis Ababa

TORONTO, Canada — Amhara Fano National Movement (AFNM) forces on Thursday reported massive military gains over government forces in the Shoa area of the Amhara region of Ethiopia.
Public relations head Asres Mare shared on his Facebook page that the South Front AFNM Shoa Teklay Gizat 5th Command has taken control of several towns.
Zemero, Mehal Meda, Wogere, Meragna, Rema, Jihur, Anchekorer, Merhabete Tache Bet, Merhabete Lay Bet, and Amba towns are under Fano forces as of Thursday, according to the report.
Rebel forces from five commands coordinated their offensive on Ethiopian Defense Force positions across the aforementioned Shoa areas.
Furthermore, Fano forces reported that 520 government troops were captured in action and several hundred killed. Regarding firearm seizures, the report stated they captured 3 DSKs, 17 Bren machine guns, 15 sniper rifles, 1,575 AK-47 assault rifles, 35 military radio communication devices, and over 452 hand grenades.
However, Fano did not specify the number of its own fighters killed or injured.
The Ethiopian Defense Force has not commented on the claims at the time of this writing, and the story has not been independently verified.
However, U.S.-based Ethiopian Media Services aired video footage purportedly showing captured government forces. Pictures of Fano fighters at landmarks in the controlled towns were also circulating on social media.
The report arrived barely a week after a major rebel military victory in Mekane Selam in the South Wollo area, adjoining the Gojjam region, where a protracted, large-scale Fano insurgency has persisted for over three years.
Most of the towns reportedly controlled by Fano forces in the Shoa area lie within 150 kilometers of the capital, Addis Ababa.
The Ethiopian Defense Force launched a military operation in the Tigray region shortly after seven rebel groups, including Fano forces, announced the “Alliance For Survival” coalition, claiming control over several towns in the region, including Mekelle, Adigrat, Shire, and Adwa, among others.
Meanwhile, the Ethiopian government claims Eritrean forces invaded the Tigray region and demanded their unconditional withdrawal. Eritrea dismissed the claim as a pretext to invade Eritrean territory.
