Fano Forces Report Capture of Senior Military Commanders Amid Escalating Conflict in Amhara Region

TORONTO, Canada — Fano forces on Thursday said they captured two colonels who were commanding the 61st Division of the 803rd Corps of the Ethiopian Defense Force.
The colonels, whose pictures are circulating on social media alongside Fano’s Menelik Command commanders, are identified as Colonel Meles Ashagrie and Deputy Commander Colonel Edmealem Amare.
The battle took place in the North Wollo area of the Amhara region on Wednesday.
According to Fano forces, the two colonels and their remaining forces were besieged as they retreated following a battle loss.
Furthermore, Fano forces claimed they seized 10 Ural military trucks and weaponry, including artillery ammunition, while two other trucks were destroyed.
The Ethiopian Defense Force has not remarked on the Fano claims while making counterclaims of killing over 271 TPLF forces in northeastern Ethiopia.
The conflict in Ethiopia’s Amhara and Tigray regions escalated over the past few days following the formal announcement of the “Alliance for Survival,” a coalition of seven armed groups that had been in the making for over a year. The coalition stated that its goal is to overthrow Abiy Ahmed’s administration and form a transitional government.
On Wednesday, TPLF forces took control of three airports in the Tigray region (Mekelle, Shire, and Aksum), detaining federal police members who were posted for security duty while launching a full-scale offensive in the northeastern part of the country along the Afar and Tigray boundary. A day after the development, the Ethiopian Defense Force claimed that it launched a counteroffensive operation, killing 272 TPLF fighters and wounding 260 others.
In the Amhara region, Fano forces launched an extensive operation in the North Wollo area. Media outlets close to Fano forces, like Anchor Media, predict more intensive operations from the rebels in the days to come. Some analysts even predict that the conflict will not be protracted and that “the rebel groups could overthrow the government within a short time.”
The conflicts forced Ethiopian Airlines to cancel flights to the Tigray region and Lalibela, both tourist destinations.
