Ethiopian PM Cites Historical Lessons from Adwa and Maichew to Emphasize Modern Defense Readiness and Strategic Strength

By Staff Writer
(Nairobi, Kenya) — Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, elected by the newly formed government to lead Ethiopia for a five-year term, delivered an hour-long address asserting that his government will enforce its national interests through strength rather than reliance on external goodwill.
Reflecting on national history, Prime Minister Abiy contrasted the Victory of Adwa with the 1935 Italian invasion, noting that while foreign forces prepared technologically for decades, Ethiopia remained underprepared for aerial warfare. He highlighted that patriotic forces confronted hundreds of modern combat aircraft with only a small number of non-military planes at Maichew, emphasizing that failing to anticipate evolving security threats carries severe national consequences.
The Prime Minister warned against remaining vulnerable to modern technological or aerial threats. He urged lawmakers to evaluate national defense readiness, calling on the state to anticipate potential vectors of aggression and maintain robust security capabilities across all domains.
Turning to domestic governance, Prime Minister Abiy defended his administration’s policy framework, asserting that unifying national narratives has brought significant political and economic progress.
He highlighted structural reforms that transitioned peripheral and central political movements into a multinational party structure. Addressing global and regional shifts, Prime Minister Abiy stated that the government has modernized its approach to manage multiple security and economic priorities simultaneously, noting that strategic state projects are already generating revenue and positioning the country to act from a stance of strength.
