(Nairobi, Kenya) — The Addis Ababa City Council reappointed Adanech Abebe to lead the municipal executive for a new five-year term during the opening session of its 7th-term, 1st-year assembly on September 30, 2026.

The municipal legislature retained its incumbent Speaker and Deputy Speaker in their respective parliamentary positions before officially administering the oath of office to Mayor Adanech.

Following her confirmation, Mayor Adanech unveiled a reorganized municipal cabinet introducing 14 newly appointed executive officials.

Under the new executive alignment, former Deputy Mayor Jantirar Abay stepped down, with former Dessie City Mayor Samuel Mollaligne appointed as Deputy Mayor and Head of the Planning and Development Bureau. Mayor Adanech assigned senior leadership across key municipal bureaus, designating Million Mathewos as Head of the Works and Skills Bureau with the rank of Deputy Mayor.

Former South Region President Tilahun Kebede assumed the role of Head of the Public Service and Human Resource Development Bureau with the rank of Deputy Mayor, having been relieved of his regional duties prior to the South Region Council’s session. Furthermore, Haftay Gebreegziabher was named Head of the Culture and Tourism Bureau with the rank of Deputy Mayor, while Abdulqadir Redwan was appointed Head of the Finance Bureau with the rank of Deputy Mayor.

Addressing the assembly, Mayor Adanech emphasized that the new cabinet structure reflects expanded participation for women, youth leaders, and representatives from opposition political groups. Cabinet appointments include Girma Seyfu as Head of the Industry Development Bureau, alongside NAMA Central Committee member Tsiyon Dereje as Head of Social Participation and Volunteer Coordination. The city council accepted and confirmed all executive nominations presented by the mayor.

Outlining her administration’s economic roadmap, Mayor Adanech stated that municipal priorities will focus on controlling inflation, expanding local production, reducing living costs, and modernizing commercial market systems. The mayor added that city strategy will pivot away from evaluating success purely on project volume, prioritizing instead a dynamic market economy designed to generate broad job opportunities and wealth creation for youth, women, and urban residents.
