Ethiopian Defense Force Claims It has Killed “200 extremists in Gojjam”

North Amhara Zone forces of Amhara Fano National Force (AFNF) claims to have killed over 215 government forces in a span of one week

Toronto –  “The East Command is intensifying its law enforcement operations in the Gojjam zone,” the defense force announced with claims that it has killed 200 “extremists” – a reference to Fano forces.

The Defense Force also said that 53 others are wounded.  It did not specify if there was a casualty from the defense force.

News Release published on the Defense Force Social media page indicated that the figures are from the operations between November 27 and December 9 in North Gojjam, Awai, and west Gojjam districts.

It is also indicated that there was an operation in Bahir Dar , based on Defense Force news release, which is the seat of the Amhara regional state.

The Defense Force described its operation as “fast, mobile and clandestine.”

It went on to claim that 41 “extremists” were captured, 19 surrendered and 37 “gave in” on condition of Amnesty.

In terms of seized firearms, the defense force claimed that it has collected 174 AK 47, 191 rifles, 6 Chi Chi, 14 handgun, 15 hand grenades  and 14 land mines.

Fano forces have not yet remarked on the latest claim from the Ethiopian Defense Force.

What is self-evident from a news release from the defense force is that it is battling Fano forces well over six months after the Defense Chief of Staff Field Marshal Berhanu Jula made claims in the Ethiopian parliament that 90 percent of the rebel groups are eliminated.

One of the firearms that it claimed to have seized from Fano Forces is an 82 millimeter mortal launcher which appears to suggest that what the Defense Force calls “extremists” are still  undertaking operations on a larger scale than guerilla ambush tactics.

Fano’s Forces new claim

Meanwhile, Fano forces are making claims that they have killed over 215 government forces and wounded 80 others in a span of one week in Metema districts, North Gondar area of the region. However, they did not disclose if there were any casualties on their side, as was the case with the defense force.

Yohannes Nigussu, who spoke to Anchor media, attributed the claimed military gain to the operations of four Corps of Belay Zeleke Command in Shemela Gara localities of the district, among other areas in the district.

He has also disclosed that the command is undertaking a 45 days evaluation with the aim to strengthen organizational structure by purging elements with potential links to the government.

The measure appears to be in response to the surrender of a fano leader which the government projected as a “peace negotiation in the presence of African Union and IGAD representatives.”

Fano forces in Wollo, which is under Mere Wodajo leadership, have conducted similar evaluations.

  1. It has been just customary during these few years to see the leaders of this group and the government trying to persuade people that they have the upper hand over the other. Whenever the government claims that it has killed so and so number of the rebel soldiers then both Fano and Shene would encounter that with higher numbers of kills. One starts with setting up the punch line and the other one finishes up the theatrics. But it not funny for the gullible youth and their wailing mothers, above all for the future of the country. There is nothing funny or to be jubilant about it. Senseless and bloody conflicts never come and go without leaving poisonous residue behind. The country will be left with overwhelming number of ex fighters with disturbing and destructively conflicted character and it would be almost impossible or will take generations for the country to rebuild itself. Just look at the DR Congo, Somalia, South Sudan, Afghanistan, certain Western African and Central American countries except Costa Rica. That is why I despise those of you among our Diaspora who have been beating the drums of war and pouring gasoline on smoldering fracas from your comfy and safe homes. You send your children and grandchildren to schools and dance classes here, but you incite the gullible youth in the old country to march into awaiting infernos. You must be ashamed of yourself.
