Trump Senior Advisor Meets Ethiopian Airlines CEO In Addis Ababa

“Collaboration with U.S. Companies” agenda discussed

Trump Advisor _ Ethiopian Airlines

Toronto – Mesfin Tassew, Ethiopian Airlines CEO, on Friday met with Massad Boulos, Senior Advisor to the President of the United States of America.

According to a brief update from the airlines, their meeting was at the Skylight Hotel, which is owned and operated by Ethiopian Airlines.

Details of their meeting are unspecified. However, it is highlighted that the discussion was “on areas of collaboration and strengthening of ties between Ethiopian Airlines and US companies.”

Ethiopian Airlines has already been working with Boeing, the main aircraft supplier, for decades now.  The collaboration that is being cooked is likely to be with U.S. carriers. Notably, Ethiopian Airlines was awarded  the “US President’s Lifetime Achievement Award,” in August 2024.

Since Abiy Ahmed came to power in 2018, there have been talks of deepening privatizations of key national assets. Ethiopian Airlines was in the list that Abiy Ahmed’s administration prepared for privatization. (borkena’s story about it is available here

In 2020, there was another news story that Abiy Ahmed’s government decided to hold off the privatization of Ethiopia’s most successful state owned enterprise as the public was demonstrating noticeable resentment as observed on social media platforms. Back then his government did not consolidate power and the military conflict with the TPLF, it appeared, added pressure on his government in a way that he was not able to introduce risky policy measures like selling the Ethiopian Airlines.

However, there had been a business delegation visit, from the U.S., to Ethiopia. Shortly after that there was a rumor that the government is selling a portion of Ethiopian Airlines to the United States companies.  The story was not verified from other sources.

Before meeting with Ethiopian Airlines CEO,  Massad Boulos met with the Ethiopian Prime Minister at his office in Addis Ababa. They held talks but again it is unclear what it was about. All that the prime minister said about it was that the discussion was on a “range of issues.”

He also met with Taye Atske Selassie, President of Ethiopia, on Thursday. The president unveiled that the bilateral discussion was on trade and investment and regional issues, among other things.

It has been customary for the Ethiopian government to make information on key issues of national importance inaccessible to the public.

From the pattern of privatization scheme, it appears that Abiy Ahmed’s government could partially privatize Ethiopia’s flag bearer. His government calls the economic policy “homegrown grown grown plan”

  1. Ethiopian Airlines: The Nation’s Pride, Legacy, and Sovereignty

Ethiopian Airlines is far more than a flagship carrier—it embodies the spirit of Ethiopia itself and serves as a unifying source of pride for every citizen. Founded on 21 December 1945 and commencing operations on 8 April 1946, the airline expanded to international flights by 1951. A flagship institution passed from one generation to the next, its unbroken chain feeds the very soul of the nation.
This is the promise and legacy of our forefathers & needs to remain truly Ethiopian, and the chain must never be broken.

    Strategic Collaborations (Without Diluting Sovereignty):
To stay competitive in an ever-evolving global aerospace industry, Ethiopian Airlines can—and should—engage in targeted partnerships that enhance operations while preserving 100% full national ownership:
    – Insurance Services: Outsource to leading international insurers to leverage global risk-management expertise.
    – Ticketing and Sales: Contract U.S.-based ticket offices or sales agents under time-bound agreements, ensuring local market reach without ceding control.
    – Aircraft Procurement: Maintain flexible, rolling contracts with manufacturers like Boeing or Airbus—capped at five years—to adapt swiftly to technological advances and shifting production landscapes.

    Unwavering National Ownership:
Beyond these limited collaborations, Ethiopian Airlines must remain 100 % Ethiopian-owned. This guarantees that every strategic decision aligns with our national interests, safeguards strategic autonomy, and upholds the airline’s role as a symbol of Ethiopia’s sovereignty and progress.

    Key Takeaways

    1. Established in 1945–46 and flying internationally since 1951, Ethiopian Airlines is a multi-generational national treasure.
    2. Strategic outsourcing (insurance, ticketing) and short-term procurement contracts enhance competitiveness without risking ownership.
    3. Full Ethiopian ownership is non-negotiable—it preserves our promise to future generations and cements the airline’s legacy.

    Be well.

Donald Trump was involved in the airline industry through Trump Shuttle, which he owned from 1989 to 1992. The airline operated hourly flights between major cities in the Northeastern United States, including New York, Boston, and Washington, D.C. Trump Shuttle was initially acquired from Eastern Air Lines for $365 million, and it aimed to provide a luxury travel experience.)

    Summary of Reasons for Closure

    • Financial Problems: Many airlines faced bankruptcy due to high operational costs and competition.
    • Mergers and Acquisitions: Several airlines were absorbed by larger carriers.
    • Market Changes: Deregulation in 1978 led to increased competition, impacting many established airlines.

    – **Partnerships with Other Airlines**: Collaborations with various airlines enhance connectivity and provide passengers with more options.

    # Strong Market Position

    – **Geographical Advantage**: Located in Addis Ababa, a strategic hub for connecting Africa with the rest of the world, Ethiopian Airlines benefits from its position as a gateway to Africa.
    – **Growing Demand**: The airline has capitalized on the increasing demand for air travel in Africa, particularly for business and tourism.

    # Focus on Cargo Operations

    – **Cargo Services**: Ethiopian Airlines has developed a robust cargo division, capitalizing on the growing e-commerce and logistics sectors, which has become a significant revenue stream.

    Key takeaways:

Past data points the major reasons for Airlines ‘kiss of Death’, are

    1) Financial Problems: ( poor management)
    2) Mergers and Acquisitions: ( What Trump and company are trying to persuade Ethiopian Airlines to do…)
