Toronto –  Nikolay Spassky, the Deputy Director General of Rosatom, Russia’s State-owned Atomic Energy Corporation, who is on a working visit to Ethiopia, met with Foreign Minister Gedion Timothewos.

From what the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ethiopia disclosed on Wednesday, their meeting was more like a briefing session.

It came a day after the Ethiopian Nuclear Energy Commission and Rosatom signed the Strategic Roadmap for Nuclear Energy Development on Tuesday this week.

There was a discussion before the signing in agreement which focused “on concrete ways to implement the agreement signed in September on the peaceful use of nuclear energy,” as the  Ministry puts it.

The news release from the Ministry said that Gedion “appreciated the progress made following the nuclear cooperation agreement signed between the two countries last September.”

The document the two sides signed details “actionable plan indicating the future direction of cooperation between the two sides.” However, the ministry did shared highlights of the action plans.

Peaceful Nuclear Energy Development in Ethiopia is presented as one of the mega projects the government is pursuing.

Agreement between Ethiopia and Russia  to develop nuclear energy for peaceful purposes was first signed in September 2025  when Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed led a delegation to Moscow where he met with President Vladimir Putin.

  1. I don’t like this deal is being made with the goons in the Kremlin. I would be comfortable if this nuclear energy agreement was/is made with one of the Western powers and Good Ole USA.
