Yonas Biru (PhD) has written comprehensive series of analytical articles, on Oromummaa and the Gadaa system, which notably succeeded in shedding critical light upon the foundational theories, and on the principal architects behind it.
While I must admit to initially held significant reservations and expressing considerable skepticism concerning some of the perspectives put forth in his very first publication, I found myself increasingly persuaded by the intellectual rigor and clarity of his subsequent contributions.
Indeed, his ongoing constructive elucidations, particularly those exploring the historical trajectory and current interpretations of Oromummaa, alongside his insightful examinations of the Gada system, have proven to be exceptionally thorough and entirely satisfactory, enriching our understanding considerably.
It is with a profound sense of intellectual appreciation that I reflect upon the meticulous referenced work of Yonas Biru on his consecutive articles.
Additional relieving Information on Tesfaye Gebreab’s Literary work:
Yonas Biru’s latest article references Tesfaye Gebreab’s acclaimed fictional literary work, ‘Yebulqa Zemeta.’ This fictional book is championed by numerous Oromo activists as compelling evidence of Emperor Menelik II’s alleged brutal atrocities against the Oromo people.
Contrary to this fact, Tesfaye Gebreab himself shortly before his death has repudiated this assertion as baseless. It is now clear that, this alleged fabrication was purportedly designed as a strategic instrument to prolong the regime’s hold on power, through a divisive ‘divide and rule’ policy.
In a significant interview conducted shortly prior to his passing, Tesfaye Gebreab reportedly disclosed that the literary work attributed to him was, in fact, a deliberate creation orchestrated by ‘some Weyane leaders’ – referring to the then-ruling TPLF dominated regime.
The primary intention behind this maneuver was, according to Gebreab’s revelations, to systematically foster and exacerbate discord between Ethiopia’s two largest ethnic communities, the Amharas and the Oromos, to create deep-seated contradictions, that would prevent unified opposition and solidify the regime’s control by setting these groups against each other.
It is further asserted that certain factions within the Oromo intellectual and political elite, some perhaps gullibly, became ensnared in this calculated scheme.
The construction of the ‘Anole Statue’ is presented as a tangible outcome of this alleged manipulation, symbolizing a narrative embraced within this constructed historical fictitious framework, reportedly serving to reinforce a particular group identity or historical interpretation.
Abiy Ahmed’s regime and Oromummaa’s Lowest and Worst Level:
There is a discernible pattern in certain Oromo intellectual and political circles concerning the presentation of historical narratives and cultural importance. These accounts sometimes appear to be characterized by significant embellishment or a detachment from verifiable historical context.
A striking illustration of this phenomenon can be found in remarks made by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s recent narratives regarding the historical significance of the ‘Sof Omar Caves’.
Specifically, he articulated a narrative, similar to a fairy tale, suggesting that these caves were not a natural creation but constructed by Baale Oromo ancestors, once being centers of higher civilization and advanced learning centers, thousands of years ago in the past, where teachings were delivered in an astonishing array of languages.
He explicitly said that more than fifty modern global languages were being used at that time, mentioning English, French, Spanish, and Mandarin etc as being used in the teachings in the cave. These statements were recorded and delivered publicly in the presence of his accompanying ministerial delegation inside ‘Sof Omar Caves’.
It is predictable that many people who listened to his fictitious lecture at that time, could have consequently raised questions in their thoughts about the factual basis of his historical pronouncements and the standards of historical accuracy maintained within high-level Oromummaa political leadership.
Oromummaa Role on Other Ethnic Groups’ Subjugation and Suffering:
Since the consolidation of power approximately seven years ago by what many identify as an Oromummaa-dominated political establishment, there have been widespread reports of profound injustices against other ethnic groups in Ethiopia. Actions targeting various ethnic groups have created deep fissures within the nation, with many disturbing consequences.
A good example of this is Oromummaa concocted revenge atrocities that have been perpetuated upon the Amhara people in Oromiya for the last seven years and in their own Amhara region for the last three years.
In these past three years, Abiy Ahmed is carrying out savage atrocities against the Amhara people such as: breast mutilation, summary killing on innocent civilians, market places drone attacks, heavy weapon destructions of villages and developmental infrastructures, restrictions of free movement, abductions and confiscation of properties etc. is being carried out on a daily basis.
These atrocities being carried out appear to be a systematic effort to promote a specific historical narrative surrounding Oromummaa and Gadaa, which critics contend is a selective and potentially fabricated interpretation of the past.
This false narrative, as argued by my scholars, is being disseminated to cultivate division and resentment between ethnic groups , fostering an environment where hatred and retribution are increasingly prevalent.
