Toronto, Canada — Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed delivered a speech on Wednesday at the convention center in Addis Ababa before about 4,000 people, including diplomats, who gathered for the launch of the National Dialogue.
The event came in the aftermath of the country’s seventh general election, which resulted in what was described as a “landslide victory.” The election drew extensive criticism from opposition groups and activists inside and outside Ethiopia.
The launch of the National Dialogue and Abiy Ahmed’s speech also drew criticism. Yared Hailemariam, a prominent human rights defender who was forced to flee Ethiopia for security reasons, was among those who criticized the event.
In an interview with Anchor Media, Yared described the launch as an “inauguration” of Abiy Ahmed’s “win.”
