TORONTO- Canada —  The United States Embassy in Addis Ababa on Wednesday announced a security alert that it described as  “possible long-range attacks directed at Ethiopian military installations”  this month.  It advised the U.S. citizens to exercise caution.

There were reports of unverified drone attacks on the Ethiopian AirForce in Debre Zeit earlier this week which the government denied. It dismissed it as “propaganda.”

“The U.S. Embassy in Addis Ababa is aware of reports of possible long-range attacks directed at Ethiopian military installations on several instances in October of this year. U.S. citizens should accordingly exercise caution and follow the advice of local authorities,”  the embassy  stated in its security alert.

Furthermore, it advised US citizens to specifically avoid traveling to certain parts of Ethiopia. Amhara region, Tigray Region and Afar regions are to be avoided entirely.  The embassy warns that citizens should not travel to these regions for any reasons. Citizens already in these regions are advised to leave if they find it safe to do so or find shelter until the situations improve while monitoring local media for updates.

Also, the embassy warned that there could be  internet and phone service disruptions in those areas.

Citizens who are not yet in the country are advised to reconsider travelling to Ethiopia.

The Embassy described the security situation in Addis Ababa as “stable.”

Furthermore, the embassy warned about “disinformation” on the security situation in the country. It recommended for citizens to “follow reliable news outlets.”

The security alert came following escalation of the conflict in the Tigray region. The Ethiopian Defense Force this week took control of Mekelle without a significant resistance from the TPLF fighters which was projected as, in pro-TPLF media outlets, as “strategic retreat.” However, the defense force has not released any information about its military activity in the Tigray region. Video footage purportedly showing the Defense Force in Mekle was circulating on social media.

On Wednesday, Reuters and BBC cited residents to report that Eritrean troops were spotted in Adigrat. The Ethiopian government also claimed that Eritrean forces have entered the Ethiopian territory and demanded their immediate withdrawal. However, Eritrea denied that its troops were on Ethiopian soil.

Notably, the U.S. State Department earlier this week issued a statement about worsening cross-border tension between Eritrea and Ethiopia. It stated that the conflict has “the potential to affect the entire region.”
