United Kingdom and United States Call for Immediate De-escalation of Ethiopia-Eritrea Tensions

By Staff Writer
(Nairobi, Kenya) — The United Kingdom and the United States have issued urgent diplomatic calls for restraint, urging Ethiopia and Eritrea to de-escalate rising border tensions and commit to peaceful dialogue to prevent further instability across the Horn of Africa.
In an official statement released on October 15, 2026, a spokesperson for the UK government expressed serious concern over the worsening security environment between the two neighboring states. The UK government urged all parties to respect the sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity of nations across the region. Strongly condemning any cross-border incursions or territorial violations, London called for an immediate cessation of provocative actions and reiterated its full support for African Union-led mediation mechanisms aimed at restoring stability.
Concurrently, the United States Department of State confirmed that US Secretary of State Marco Rubio held a direct phone consultation with Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed on October 14, 2026, to address regional security dynamics. During the discussion, Rubio emphasized that the Horn of Africa cannot endure another major military confrontation, urging all regional governments to refrain from cross-border aggression. The Secretary underscored that lasting regional peace and stability must be grounded in the foundational principles of the 2018 Ethiopia-Eritrea peace framework.
