Toronto – The U.S. government on Friday announced that it is terminating  “Temporary Protected Status” for Ethiopians.

Citizenship and Immigration Service said the Secretary of Homeland Security made the decision “After careful consideration and deliberation of country conditions.”

According to the statement from the department, ““Conditions in Ethiopia no longer pose a serious threat to the personal safety of returning Ethiopian nationals. Since the situation no longer meets the statutory requirements for a TPS designation, Secretary Noem is terminating this designation to restore integrity in our immigration system.”

Kristi Noem, Secretary of Homeland Security, did spell out in her release as to why the U.S. government thinks that the situation in Ethiopia is safe for Ethiopians.

The decision came days after Congressman Buddy Carter introduced a resolution in the congress against egregious “human rights violations, including the persecution of Christians, and urging the Secretary of State to use all available diplomatic tools to protect innocent civilians against their abusive, corrupt government.”

Secretary Kisti believes that termination of TPS designation for Ethiopians restores” integrity in our immigration system.”

Asylum seekers impacted by the decision are required to leave the country within 60 days or face forced deportations. Trump’s administration is offering a plane ticket and $1000 for those who opt to return voluntarily.

“This is a safe, secure way to self-deport that includes a complimentary plane ticket, a $1,000 exit bonus, and potential future opportunities for legal immigration,”  Secretary Kristi said in her press release.

Recently, there have been reports of extensive persecutions in Ethiopia on religious and political grounds. Human rights organizations have been releasing statements about it.

Dozens of politicians in the opposition quarter, including a parliamentarian, are behind bars as the ruling Prosperity Party – which is believed to be acting like a vassal government to the United States, among other actors – intensified crackdown over the past three or so years.

Ethiopia has also been experiencing conflict in the Amhara and Oromia regions. In the Amhara, recurring extrajudicial kilings, rape and drone attack targetting civilians have been reported. In November this year, BBC reported over 2000 rape cases in the Amhara region. The number is based on reported cases only to 45 health centers in the region.

Rights abuse are believed to be under-reported in Ethiopia due to government restriction to conflict areas. Human Rights Organizations in the country have been under pressure and some of them have closed down.

Ethiopian Diaspora organizations in the United States have been organizing protests and writing letters to their representatives against the human rights situation in the country.

At the time of this writing, no official response came from the diaspora organization regarding the U.S. Homeland Security assessment that the situation in Ethiopia is “safe.”

  1. This decision to terminate TPS should not apply to Tigrayans because Tigray is a de facto state and the US mediated Pretoria agreement has failed to deliver. War between Tigray and the Abiy government is a possibility since the latter is engaged in provocative measures. Tigray will be forced to go for regime change in Ethiopia and the US should understand the situation.

  2. “The decision affects approximately 5,000 Ethiopians who were granted TPS after fleeing violence and humanitarian crises. The termination will take effect in early February 2026, giving current beneficiaries two months to either depart voluntarily or secure another legal pathway to remain in the United States.”zehabsha
Why is this decision affecting only 5000 Ethiopians? Are there only 5000 ethiopains in US ?
Remove Abiy Ahmed (your agent) before terminating TPS for these ethiopains
