Toronto – Two senior journalists are abducted in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa within a week.
On Monday, Journalist Abdulsemed Mohammed was reportedly abducted in the capital Addis Ababa from his work place area in the 22 locality of Addis Ababa.
He used to work for Selenda Communication and host the “Kidame Gebeya” business show on Ahadu Radio.
With over 30 years of experience, the father of four, including a new born one, has been leading and preparing what sources described as a popular show.
The employer stated that “his family does not know his whereabouts.” Understandably, the family members are said to be in great agony. They have been searching for him in all the prison facilities in the city.
The suspicion is that the government is behind the kidnapping.
It has been nearly six days now and the government has not disclosed his whereabouts let alone appearing in courts.
Yonas Amare, another prominent journalist is reportedly kidnapped from Sheger city near Koye Feche and his whereabouts is not known either. He has been working for the Ethiopian Reporter as senior editor and producer. More details about the condition of his abduction is available here.
The Federal police have remarked about the abduction at the time of this writing.
Over the past few months, the Ethiopian government has been mounting a crackdown in the capital Addis Ababa apparently with anticipation of an outbreak of the popular protest in the capital. Yet, again the freedom of the press has been a target in recent years as the Prime Minister’s Administration continues to suffer a legitimacy crisis over worsening conditions and cost of living, not to mention the security crisis.

Kidnapping for ransom money are said to be in an uptick especially in the three regions of Amhara, Tigray and Oromia. That was my lingering worry for quite some time. All the ingredients are there. Current and former battle hardened combatants are everywhere and many of those who returned to their towns and villages are not all totally rehabilitated. With no jobs readily available, it is common for such former combatants to turn to organized crimes. Honduras, El Salvador and Guatemala are perfect examples. If they kidnap you and give your loved ones an ultimatum to pay ransom and otherwise they will kill you, they mean it. It was reported that many truck and bus drivers, teachers, civil servants, healthcare workers and merchants have been targets and were mercilessly murdered by such thugs. Those of you who.have plans to travel to that country should be careful of your surroundings especially in those three regions.
Obviously they are kidnapped by the government agents to silence them not to report the current economical collapse. Some stupid ተከፋይ ካድሬዎች try to foolish us. The time of confuse and convince is over!!
