Toronto – Turkish Foreign Affairs Minister , Hakan Fidan, is in Ethiopia. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ethiopia on Saturday has disclosed that Mr. Hakan met with his Ethiopian counterpart, Ambassador Taye Astke- Selassie.
According to the Ministry, they discussed Sudan, Somalia and other regional issues as well bilateral relations.
“They reaffirmed the need to work in cooperation for peace and stability in the Horn of Africa,” MFAE said in a brief update it shared on its social media page.
Turkey initiated a talk between Ethiopia and Somalia last month. The Foreign Affairs Ministers of the two East African countries last month met in Ankara to discuss their difference over the Memorandum of understanding that Ethiopia signed with Somaliland ( which developed into tension).
Not much was discussed during the first round of the meeting. Ankara has made arrangements for the second round of talk to take place in September 2024 with which the two sides agreed.
Turkey has its largest military base in Somalia and wields noticeable influence over the Federal government in Somalia.
Somalia has been making accusations that Ethiopia violated its sovereignty when it signed a memorandum of understanding on January 1, 2024 with Somaliland which existed as a de facto state for over three decades.
Recently, Somalia was making another accusation against Ethiopia in connection with the circulation of “illegal arms” in Somalia. Last week, Ethiopia responded to it calling Somalia’s statement provocative.
The situation in Sudan is not getting better too. There are reports that the two warring factions are meeting in Addis Ababa some time next month. Hakan Fidan’s visit to Addis might have something to do with that too.
