Toronto – In a meeting with Egyptian President Sisi on the sidelines of the Davos Economic Forum, U.S. President Donald Trump described the situation between Ethiopia and Egypt as “dangerous.”
He was speaking as if Ethiopia and Egypt share a border and that Ethiopia “blocked” the flow of Abbay river ( Nile) to the lower riparian countries.
He said, “Situation over DAM on Egypt-Ethiopia border is ‘DANGEROUS’…‘All of a sudden the water flow is blocked’ ” painting a picture that Egypt, which he denoted as “somebody”, not getting waters they used to for “millions of years,” apparently confirming Egypt’s historical right narrative.
The flow of Abbay water to Sudan and Egypt is not blocked. Egypt and Ethiopia do not share a border either.
Currently, the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), which was inaugurated on September 9 2025, said to have 74 billion cubic meters of water in the reservoir.
Ethiopia has been pushing for an equitable share of the Nile water 86 percent of which originates from the Ethiopian highlands.
Egypt on the other hand claims a “historical right” – which grants monopoly of the water – based on the 1959 colonial era agreement to which Ethiopia and several other riparian countries are not a party to it.
The rounds of talks between Ethiopia, Egypt and Sudan were stalled after several years. Last week, Donald Trump offered to mediate the countries. Ethiopia is yet to respond to the offer.
Donald Trump has also reiterated this week that the United States financed GERD, a claim that contravenes Ethiopian government claims that the Dam was financed from domestic sources including from sale of a bond to the public.
It took more than 14 years to complete what is now being described as the biggest dam in Africa. Well over $5billion is reportedly spent.
More than 65 percent of Ethiopia’s 120 million population hopes to get electric power from the 5000 MW the dam is generating.

The brain behind the grand renaissance dam is the late great Tigray late leader Meles Zenawi and it should be renamed `Meles Zenawi grand dam`. Tigrayan engineers and experts of various fields were acrively involved in the planning and execution of the dam project which Abiy Ahmed mismangaed and reduced its capacity.
Digital Tigraway – I wonder where you are holed up to write this idiocy comment. I am certain you are not in Tigray. Such is the brain of ethnically drunk idiots, spewing poison wherever they go. It is true the start of the Dam was during the era of the TPLF – EPDRF time. However, the ruthless regime was not the first to envision the construction of the Dam over the Nile River. Others have tried and failed for several reasons. Speaking of mismanagement of funds, TPLF is the Author of the book. You can check UN report and other researched studies about the TPLF from its inception up to now.
When it comes about the comments of the US president, the world has never seen such a person in power in a long time. Buckle up there is Three more years to go! Words that come out of his mouth do not carry any facts. He tells it as he imagines it. Therefore, trying to refute his assumption is pointless. If I were to advise the government of Ethiopia, I will extend an official visit to the President so he can see it for himself. He does not even know where the source of the Nile River is. Visiting the Dam and the Country will help him reach a more just decision between conflicting countries regarding the use of the Nile Water.
This article does Not include what else was in the letter and the President’s press briefing. He had also mentioned the benefits both Sudan and Egypt can benefit by getting cheap electricity from the dam. Since the letter is addressed to the president of Egypt, he had to highlight Egypt’s worries emanating from the dam. To understand that you have to remember the main job of all dams.
The first and foremost function of any dam is to hold back or regulate, if you may, the flow of water. It may be intended to generate a much needed electricity or stop the river from flooding areas nearby of farther down the stream. If you are a country like Egypt, which has been rightfully billed as a ‘gift of the Nile’, where more than 90% of its population relies on the water from the river, you should be worried. It could be legit or exaggerated. The only way issues and concerns can be sorted out is thru negotiations and in this case mediation. I wish the president success in the endeavor.
The other point is who paid for the construction of the dam? We all know that the citizens of that country have been chipping the last red cent in their almost empty pockets to fund the construction of the dam since its beginning. That is a fact. But it should also be understood that the billions Ethiopia has been receiving in all forms of direly needed aids has played direct or indirect role in funding the construction of the dam. Such financial aids had helped the government there to free up more resources for the dam. So, the financing of the dam should be looked at this way. I am for continued negotiations and mediations. I wish them all luck.
Digital Tigeraway,
I don’t deny the stealing of funds by General Kinfe. But you should know that Kinfe is not a true Tigraway. As for Tigrayan engineers, they were the ones who built tunnels inside the rocky hills where our valiant fighters were hiding from Abiy’s drones.
Name the Tigrayan Engineers, if any.
Simegnew Bekele was Agew.
