Toronto – The Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) seems to think that war between Eritrea and Ethiopia is inevitable. Yet, it is speaking out that “nothing will be achieved through war.”
In an interview with Brakhe Show, Amanuel Assefa, Deputy Chairman of the TPLF factions under the leadership of Debretsion Gebremichael, says “we are witnessing military shows that appear to be preparations for war.” The war, he says, will have a geopolitical danger , and that the two countries should think about it wisely.
“In my speculation the situation will not lead to a peaceful situation ; there is no question that it will lead to war,” he added.
He described the situation between the two countries as “worrisome.” He explained it. “If the two countries start war, it will be Tigray that will be the theatre of war. Our people endured many sufferings. We have got enough war.”
The Tigray region was devastated by the two years war between the TPLF led Tigray regional state and Abiy Ahmed led Federal government which also devastated the Afar and Amhara regions of Ethiopia.
Amanuel also remarked about reported TPLF military leaders and Eritrean government relations. He dismissed it as baseless ; no evidence whatsoever.
The TPLF or the security forces leaders will not pursue an anti-Ethiopian government move to ally with Eritrea or “other forces.” The “other forces” are not elaborated.
There have been allegations that some TPLF military leaders – who later expressed support to the faction under Debretsion Gebremichael – were smuggling gold from mining sites in Tigray via Eritrea. Eritrea has also denied it.
The TPLF seems to have a recent history of relations with Egypt. Getahew Reda, President of Tigray Interim Administration and leader of one of the TPLF factions, had disclosed a few months ago that Egypt delivered support to TPLF during the two years war against the Abiy Ahmed led government.
Egypt is now allying with Eritrea and Somalia apparently with the hope of weakening Ethiopia further. Last week, Egyptian FM Badr Abdelatty was in Asmara where he held talks with Eritrean president Isaias Afeworki on a range of issues including regional security.
The relation between Eritrea and Ethiopia is near a point of military confrontation after the two countries have been trading accusations. A recent OpEd piece by former Ethiopian President Mulatu Tehome published on Al Jazeera – which the Ethiopian government disowned later – accuses Eritrea of working with one faction of TPLF to stir conflict in the Horn of Africa region. Eritrea on its part accused Ethiopia of “war mongering.”

You folks are not listening to what I have been telling you since 1975. I told you the TPLF was founded for specific reasons meant for specific race, not the noble and upright people of Tigray. It was created to liberate a unique Gold race. It is not ‘golden’ race. You better watch your language. ‘Golden’ is something plated with gold. TPLF is made of pure 24kt gold. The rest of us are made up of the rustiest type ferrous metal. That is why we can’t think and we obviously need the Gold Race to think for us. I told you that a million times and you have not been listening. My Oromos? So rusty. My Amhara neighbors? So rusty. We desperately need the Gold Race to think for just as they were doing before 2018. Pardon me for now. I just rubbed off that Gold thing on me and have started thinking for the first time since 2018. Shhhhhhh!!!

Now, what I find puzzling is how and why the Eritrean administration of some 32 years is unable to see the fact that its citizens wellbeing and economic prosperity can be enhanced by many-fold not by wagging ‘wars’ ( it has known forever as ELF and beyond), but only by having a good & better neighborly relationship & well-connected economic collaboration activities with its Southern neighbor with which it was a part a few decades earlier, and has an existing people to people including blood family ties, and long shared cultural, & traditional-value connections for the longest time in record.
After 3 plus decades of economic struggle ( its countless young drowning in the Mediterranean sea trying to escape the harsh reality of life & war economy reality); it should be clear to everyone in Eretria that Ethiopia is, its only source of wealth and prosperity, more than any of its neighbors hands down.
In fact I would like to take that one step further and argue, (though it is done with) giving away the largest land mass called Ethiopia, and the wealth within it & the bustling economic activities everywhere, and depriving every Eritrean child (and those yet to come) and forcing them to settle for small stripe of dry-land, was a very very misguided and stupid move, if not unforgivable crime. That goes for all those idiots that huddle-around all kinds of acronyms ending with “LF” thinking they are doing something good & glorious for the people, but not.
TPLF is the stupidest of them all (in perpetual stagnation), even after it reached the top leadership position (beyond its wildest dreams (original scope)) in the nation of Ethiopia that includes the province it declared to be the “LF” of, kept calling itself TPLF from 1991 – 2018, and still today as it was in 1970s & 80s; and this are the people the people of Tigray are being unfortunate enough (cursed) to live under, bringing them nothing but the same suffering they become accustomed to since under the Derg rule (1974 to the 90s).
Sadly, our people in Eritrea weren’t better off either, shared the same predicament, as our people in Tigray, and some places here and there in other places have been under, just the same since the 1970s.
Now, the whole unpleasantness that has been hovering over the heads of our people from North to South, East to West could be turned around, if we all collectively come to our senses and realize that ‘tribalism’ is a poison, and all we have is each other, and only our UNITY can get us out of these miseries that were brought about by petty thinking, misunderstandings, lack of focus, and by giving our power to a few brainwashed, disagreeable, misguided, and SHORTSIGHTED people in our mix (among us).
WAR has shown time and again not to be the solution, yet those trapped in a loop of ‘insanity’ ( ‘doing the same thing expecting a different result’, AE) are STUCK, and are unable to see any other option or the way out, and continue with what they KNOW, bloodletting & death. Till they are no longer (go 6 ft under).
Borders only exist in peoples mind.
There is an old saying in our country: “that which is tied while running, will untie soon enough ( before the run is over.)”; that is what has been happening to us, at least since 1974.
The question is: have we learned from it all, and have we reached the place where we are honest enough to admit to ourselves (without pointing fingers), that we were wrong? and commit ourselves to take the steps necessary to change course?
So, future generations of Ethiopians do not have to go through what we went through since 1970, even earlier than that.
This is only possible when we come to terms that each and everyone of us, ‘we are mortal’; it is estimated on average over a million people won’t wake up from their sleep, if you are not one of them tomorrow morning, have a big smile, and live the day as if it was your last. And you will do wonders, for you and everyone that is around you, or comes in contact with you!!!
The world is a peaceful place, the chaos only exist in the human mind.
