Toronto – The crisis in the Tigray region of Ethiopia has been deepening for many months now with fears that war could break out.

This week, another concerning story is heard from the region. The armed groups in the region who have been projected as “Tigray Defense Force” are rebelling against their commanders.

Two video footage purportedly depicting the tension were shared on social media this week.

In one of the videos, this one is shared by Soloda channel which mostly covers stories from the region, a young combatant who said he is twenty years old, said the General (Maesho) “looks 20 when 80 years old and he [the combatant] looks 80 when he is only 20.”  The forces applauded his speech.

The army complains that the army generals are affording a lavish lifestyle for their children overseas while the combatants are made to constantly fight to protect their interest.

Another video footage that is widely shared on social media purportedly depicts the army blocking the way of General Megebe who is believed to be a radical militant working for another round of war. The blockade is an expression of opposition.

What is known so far is their grievance is related to unpaid benefits and salaries. The armed forces protest is said to be widespread in the region.

The two generals, facing opposition and being ridiculed by their armies were revered for years,  are known to be Debretsion led TPLF.

Opposition groups operating in the region and some notable figures including politicians like Gebru Asrat and General Tsadkan Gebretensae, who were both key leaders of the TPLF in the past, have been alarming that the TPLF under Debretsio and the generals that support him have been working with Eritrean government to go to war against the Federal government.

Notably, a significant number of what used to be “Tigray Defense Force” drifted opposing preparation for another war  and alliance with Eritrea. This force initially organized itself as Hara Meret  but was later named  “Tigary Peace Force” and has been operating in the Afar region of Ethiopia.

This week, Sebhat Nega, ideologue of the TPLF, spoke out against the TPLF leaders. He recommended that “the leadership need to be cut and thrown away.” He is also cited as painting a pessimistic view of the military alliance with Eritrea. He is said to have stated that “Isaias [Eritrean president] is unsuitable for working together”, and that TPLF should rather ally with Fano and Oromo Liberation Army.

From the stories emerging from the region, the TPLF is in a deeper legitimacy crisis and “Tsimdo” – the new TPLF and Eritrea alliance is aggravating the problem.

The anti-war movement in the region seems to be getting to a point where it can stop TPLF from triggering another war – which its opponents interpret as a strategy to escape from accountability for many crimes including for the outbreak of the bloody war between 2020-2022.

Those who oppose the war argue that the Tigray region can no longer live when it is already suffering from the consequences of the  last one.  They also accuse the Eritrean government of attempting to avoid war on its soil.
