Toronto – The Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) on Friday alleged the Federal forces attacked what it calls “Tigray Forces” along the Afar-Tigray boundaries.
In a letter to Mahmoud Ali Youssouf ,the Chairperson of the African Union, Debretsion Gebremichael, Chairman of TPLF, alleges “At approximately 3:30 A.M. on November 7, Federal forces carried out a drone strike on Tigray Forces in the Tigray-Afar border area, causing casualties and property destruction…”
It sees the alleged action as a “dangerous escalation” and serious violation of the Cessation of Hostility Agreement.
Days before the TPLF’s allegation, the Afar regional state alleged that the TPLF forces crossed to the Afar region and took control of about six kebeles of Megal district of the Afar region.
Other local sources have reported as many as 200 pastoralists communist in the districts have been displaced due to TPLF’s latest military attacks in the region.
Initially, it appeared that the TPLF was pursuing an ethnic Tigray armed group which called itself Tigray Peace Force (TPLF) that was operating along the Afar-Tigray boundaries.
General Gebregziabher Beyene (also known as Wodi Antiru) parted ways with TPLF and is now said to be the leader of this group. Notably, there was a report in mid August this year that another military general who was posted along the Eritrean border rebelled against the TPLF. Detail is available here.
The group asserts that it took up arms because the TPLF, which is said to have formed a new alliance with the Eritrean government, has made preparations to ignite war again and affect the region.
The TPLF tends to believe that the Federal drone strike against the “Tigary Forces” was in support of the group. The number of casualties and the extent of alleged property damage is not highlighted in Debretion’s letter to the AU Chairperson.
It also explicitly alleged that the Federal government has been “organizing and arming” hostile groups over the past three years.
The letter called on the AU, the United Nations and the International community to put pressure on the Ethiopian government to “honour” the Pretoria Agreement.
The Ethiopian government has not yet remarked on the allegations.
When the Ethiopian Defense Force was commemorating the 5th anniversary of TPLF’s unprovoked attack on the Northern Command of the Ethiopian Defense Force earlier this week, the Defense Chief of Staff Berhanu Jula vowed to respond to the TPLF’s violation of the Pretoria Agreement.
One of the core provisions of the Pretoria Agreement was for the TPLF to disarm itself and reintegrate its fighters back to the community. There have been confirmed reports for several weeks now that the TPLF has been mobilizing for another round of war.
Some tend to think that the alleged military attack TPLF launched in Afar this week is aimed at taking control of more areas in the region to the point of controlling the shipping and and receiving corridor.
