NAIROBI, Kenya — The Tigray Communication Affairs Bureau released an official statement accusing the Prosperity Party-led federal government of mounting military operations across the region and threatening regional stability.
The Bureau reported that federal forces executed drone strikes, heavy artillery bombardments, and airstrikes targeting multiple locations, including Merewa District in Southern Tigray, Mariam Kubi village in Waja Timuga District, and Dandera near Mekelle. Most recently, warplane strikes targeted civilian residences in the Momona neighborhood of Hawelti Sub-City in Mekelle, hitting housing occupied by teachers. The attack wounded at least 13 people, including children, and severely damaged residential property.
According to regional officials, federal forces previously attacked Tigray security positions on August 1, 2026, at Shererina in Western Tigray. While Tigrayan forces repelled the engagement, officials emphasized that they deliberately avoided actions that could further escalate the situation.
The release highlighted that ongoing persistent drone surveillance, combined with an economic blockade and siege, continues to inflict severe psychological trauma and economic strain on the population. Regional authorities noted that the timing of the recent strikes disrupted celebrations for Ashenda, a key cultural festival celebrating Tigrayan identity and heritage.
While asserting its commitment to peaceful dialogue, the Tigray Communication Affairs Bureau warned that its strategic restraint should not be mistaken for weakness or an inability to defend its territory.
The Bureau called on the international community to break its silence, condemn the unprovoked attacks, and take decisive diplomatic steps to prevent a complete collapse of the peace process before the situation devolves into another full-scale war.
