Addis Ababa, Ethiopia – A total of 21 religious leaders, representing seven religious institutions and three representatives from each religious institution, entered Mekelle city, Tigray region, today.
During their stay, they are expected to discuss peace with the Tigray Regional Interim Administration (TIRA), Tadesse Woreda, and army commanders. Borkena will cover the details of the discussions as follow-up. It is expected that the delegation team is going to work on the recent escalation of tensions between the TIRA and the federal government.
Less than a week ago, Borkena reported that the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) alleged the Ethiopian Federal Government of threatening a new invasion of Tigray, a move the group warns is increasing “fear and anxiety” among the region’s citizens.
The statement further alleged that the Ethiopian government is arming militants from various locations to harass Tigray and divert attention from the main agenda, urging the international community to recognize that these actions are entirely irresponsible and contradict the Pretoria Agreement.
“The Pretoria Agreement has brought much-needed relief to Tigray by ending daily loss of life and restoring peace, while also fostering a new national approach by engaging former combatants for unity,” Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed said in his July 3, 2025, parliamentary address.
Abiy also stated that the federal government was committed to peace despite persistent difficulties and “misguided” expectations of foreign intervention. He emphasized that Tigray needs dialogue, not war, and urged all Ethiopians to support national dialogue for enduring peace. He also called on religious leaders, diplomats, and elders to help defuse tensions.

Religion will not save Tigray
This is a good sign and such gathering of elders and religious leaders should always be supported and encouraged. I hope the support they get from their own people will be strong enough to overwhelm those who have brought death and destruction to their region since 1975. I hope the day is on the near horizon when they are the ones who will have the deciding voice in their affairs and not those deacons/darasaas of Marx, Lenin and Mao. I hope they will gather the courage and power to yank away the ruling mantle of their region from the goons among them once and for all.
