Toronto – Three unarmed civilians are reportedly killed in the Oromia region of Ethiopia.
According to Ethiopian Media Services, the incident took place in the East Shoa zone of the region, Gimbichu district on Thursday.
The region’s special forces and militia have been deployed to the area.
The three victims are identified as Teklu Hailemichael (97 years old), Minda Hailemichael (86 years old) and Diacon Genene Negarge (39 years old).
The source is unspecified if the victims are laid to rest or not. What is known is that the victims were killed with knives and machetes.
While the killing does not appear to be an ordinary homicide, it is unspecified if it was politically motivated.
Incidents like these have been prevalent in the Oromia region of Ethiopia particularly against ethnic Amhara and also the followers of Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church.
Oftentimes the government links killings like this to a militant ethnic Oromo Nationalist Group operating in the region – which calls itself Oromo Liberation Army.
However, the government itself has been implicated in the killings and kidnappings in the region. An investigative report published by Reuters in March 2024, revealed that Kore Negegna ( which reportedly receives orders from government authorities) has been behind the killings and kidnapping in the region.
The location of the latest reported incident of killing is within a range of 100 kilometers from the capital Addis Ababa.
