Toronto – The devastating war currently underway in Ethiopia’s Amhara region has arguably caused more destruction than the conflicts in Ukraine or the Middle East. Thousands of civilians have been killed, millions displaced, and hundreds of women raped by government forces. Yet, this conflict has not received the attention it deserves.

As Ethiopians of Amhara ethnic origin in the diaspora launch movements in Europe and North America calling for an end to what they describe as genocide against Amharas, they are turning to celebrities for help in amplifying their cause. They hope that influential figures like The Weeknd will lend their voice to end the “unimaginable suffering” of the people.

An open letter addressed to Abel Tesfaye, better known as The Weeknd, is circulating widely on social media platforms—particularly on X (formerly Twitter). The Weeknd, a globally recognized artist of Ethiopian descent, grew up in Toronto and has a large international following.

“Your platform reaches millions across the globe. By raising your voice, you can shine a light on the plight of the Amhara people and urge the international community to take action. Your advocacy could help bring much-needed attention and support to those who are suffering…” reads part of the open letter.

Since the Ethiopian federal government declared an official war in August 2023, the Amhara region has endured widespread human rights abuses, including extrajudicial killings, rape, and massive displacement.  However, the crisis has not garnered the necessary global attention.

In the latest tragedy, earlier this week, six pregnant women were killed in a drone strike when government forces targeted a health facility in Gojjam. The women were at the hospital seeking maternal care.

While the international response has been slow, reputable human rights organizations have consistently issued reports and statements calling for an end to the abuses in the Amhara region.

The open letter to The Weeknd is gaining significant traction on social media as activists hope that his influence can bring the necessary spotlight to the situation.

As of now, Abel Tesfaye has not responded to the call for his advocacy in support of ending the war in the Amhara region.
