I. Apartheid System in Oromia

Since 2018, the Oromia region has enforced policies and practices that amount to an apartheid system. Key features include:

  • Exclusion of Amhara people from public services such as hospitals, government offices, schools, and public sector jobs
  •  Ethnic discrimination in law enforcement and administration
  • Systematic displacement of Amhara families from Wollega, Shashemene, Arsi, Guji, and other areas.

These acts are part of an orchestrated effort to “cleanse” Oromia of non-Oromo populations, especially Amharas.

II. The Oromummaa Political Project

The engine behind this system is the Oromummaa political ideology, which promotes Oromo ethnic supremacy over Ethiopia’s federal structure. The federal government under Abiy Ahmed has come under the control of Oromo-nationalist actors, resulting in:

  • Disproportionate control of national institutions
  •  Marginalization and suppression of non-Oromo voices, particularly Amharas. – National policies prioritizing Oromo ethnonationalist goals over inclusive governance.

III. Crimes Against Humanity and Genocide

This political and institutional domination has escalated into ethnic cleansing and potential genocide. In Oromia and beyond:

  • Amhara civilians are targeted, killed, and displaced
  •  Security forces have either participated or allowed mass violence to occur. – Military campaigns in Amhara regions include mass arrests, bombings, and destruction of cultural sites

These acts meet international definitions of crimes against humanity and genocide.

IV. A National and International Emergency

Ethiopia is at a crossroads. The Oromuma-led system of governance has created a humanitarian crisis with national implications. Ethnic-based governance threatens the unity and peace of the entire country.

The situation demands immediate international attention and response to prevent further escalation.

Conclusion and Urgent Appeal

The apartheid system and ethnic persecution unfolding in Ethiopia require urgent action. I, Tewabe Debas, call for:

  • An independent international investigation into atrocities since 2018
  •  Humanitarian support for displaced Amhara civilians.
  • Sanctions on leaders and institutions promoting ethnic-based governance.
  • Restoration of multiethnic federalism and equality.

The world must not remain silent. Ethiopia’s future depends on justice, inclusion, and the end of apartheid practices.
