
Surafel Getahun Ashine
Biography
Surafel Getahun Ashine is an Ethiopian lecturer, researcher, journalist, political analyst, and human rights advocate. With over twelve years of experience across academia and media, he has established himself as a prominent voice on Ethiopian and Horn of Africa politics, identity conflicts, peace and security, and international law.
Surafel earned his Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Political Science and International Relations from Addis Ababa University. He then completed a Master of Arts (MA) in Peace and Development Studies. To enhance his teaching and analytical skills, he has taken various short training courses from international institutes and holds a Postgraduate Diploma in Higher Education Teaching.
Surafel served as a Lecturer of Political Science and International Relations at Dire Dawa University, where he taught since 2018 in his career until his departure into exile in January 2024. Over more than a decade, he instructed courses including Ethiopian Politics, Horn of Africa Politics, Identity Politics, International Law, and Civis and Ethical education. His scholarly output includes presenting over 17 papers at national and international conferences and publishing more than 15 articles in conference proceedings and journals. Notably, he has authored over seven articles in high-impact Scopus-indexed journals, including publications with Elsevier and Taylor & Francis.
Since 2021, Surafel has been an active political commentator across Ethiopian media. He has contributed to major national outlets such as Fana Broadcast Corporation, Addis Media Network, Addis Lisan Newspaper, Ethiopia News Agency, Ethiopia Herald, Addis Zemen, and Ahadu Radio and Television. He has also provided analysis for FM stations including FM Addis and FM 96.3. From 2022 to 2023, he ran a weekly political analysis segment for Dire Mass Media as a freelance contributor.
His expertise has been recognized internationally. He has provided political commentary for Voice of America (VOA), Deutsche Welle (DW), and AllAfrica.com.
Beyond academia and journalism, Surafel is a committed human rights activist. He consistently advocates for democratic governance, civil liberties, and the protection of vulnerable communities in Ethiopia. His public engagements and writings reflect a deep dedication to justice, accountability, and the rule of law.
Since leaving Ethiopia in January 2024, Surafel continues his work as a freelance contributor and political analyst. He currently writes for and provides analysis to several media outlets, including Borkena.com, Mesert Media.org, and ZeHabesha.org. Through these platforms, he remains an active voice on Ethiopian and regional political affairs and on broader human rights concerns.
