Nairobi, Kenya — Sudan’s Ministry of Energy and Oil announced that the unexpected stoppage of electricity supplies from Ethiopia, coupled with severe infrastructure damage from ongoing conflict, is driving worsening nationwide power outages and blackouts lasting up to 18 hours daily.

According to a report by the Sudan Tribune, an official ministry statement highlighted that the halt in cross-border power transmission from Ethiopia has created a major void in the country’s energy matrix. Officials noted that this abrupt loss of supply has added immense pressure on a grid already strained by war, compounding a crisis affecting Khartoum and other regional states.

The ministry outlined a combination of compounding factors behind the outages, including soaring summer electricity demand, the return of displaced residents to liberated districts, and rising consumption from agricultural and industrial sectors. Furthermore, routine maintenance shutdowns at major generation plants, fuel and spare parts shortages, and extensive infrastructural sabotage—such as vandalism and theft targeting transmission lines and substations—have heavily crippled grid stability.

Despite these severe security and logistical constraints, Sudanese energy authorities reported progress in emergency rehabilitation efforts. Engineering teams have successfully restored over 260 megawatts to the national grid, brought more than 20 damaged substations back online, and repaired over 1,700 kilometers of transmission lines. Officials project that available generation capacity will exceed 600 megawatts once current repair programs conclude, while managed load shedding continues to protect the fragile grid from total collapse.
