Toronto – Solomon Gezahagne – a prominent Ethiopian Defense Lawyer has arrived in Toronto, Canada, on Saturday for a two weeks working visit.
He was greeted by members of the Ethiopian Community and Teklemichael Abebe, an active member of the community and Ethiopian Lawyer who has been practicing in the country for more than eleven years now. Teklemichael Abebe is also a founding member of the Ethiopian Lawyers Association in Canada.
Source told Borkena that Mr. Solomon’s working visit to Canada was organized by the Ethiopian Community in the GTA and the Ethiopian Lawyers Association in Canada.
A prominent legal professional in Ethiopia who also makes headlines on Ethiopian news outlets in connection with the court cases of political prisoners, Mr. Solomon has gained a solid reputation in Ethiopia for his relentless and unflinching commitment to represent cases that would otherwise be without defense lawyers. The number of defense lawyers that represent cases like these are very limited. According to Borkena’s source, Solomon handles about 40 percent of the cases.
As is the case with journalists due to the attack on press freedom, many legal professionals, if not absolute majority, avoid representing the cases of political prisoners due to fear of reprisal.
Solomon is currently the defense lawyer for well-known political detainees such as Mrs. Meskerem Abera, Yohannes Buayalew, Christian Tadele, and others who were charged in the file of Wondwesen Assefa, just to cite the most recent cases.
During his two weeks stay in Canada, Solomon will be attending major Ethiopian events. According to Borkena sources, he is also scheduled to “meet with Members of Parliament whose names are unspecified at the time of this writing, officials from Canada’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, lawyers, and judges.” Arrangement is also made for observing court proceeding in the context of Canadian Justice system.
On August 30, he will be attending the “Ethiopian-Canadian Festival” where he will receive a recognition certificate prepared for the lawyers defending political prisoners.
He will also be visiting Ottawa and Montreal. He is scheduled to hold discussions with members of the Ethiopian Diaspora on the State of the state of Ethiopia’s justice system.
