Toronto – Semahegne Belew, also known as Seme Balageru, a prominent Ethiopian traditional music singer, dies at 60.
The Ethiopian Musical Association has confirmed his death.
He has been given medical attention for an unspecified health condition in Ethiopia.
Born and raised in Bahir Dar, now the seat of the Amhara regional state, he started his career in the early 1980s with Gish Abbay Club in Gojjam and has remained a star in traditional Amharic music for over four decades now.
Furthermore, he had been facing threats and arrests during the TPLF dominated federal government, apparently due to the patriotic nature of his songs.
His first popular music as a member of the Gishe Abbay Music Team was “Antuyewa Enesu Eko Lijoch Nachew” which is now well over forty years old.
Debot Enesera, Yekoraw Anbesa, and Yaziegn were among his popular traditional songs.
He is survived by his wife and four children.
