Toronto – Elizabeth Wolde Giorgis, Former Director of the Ethiopian Studies and Research Institute at Addis Ababa University, passed away in the early hours of March 16, according to sources.
She was working for The Africa Institute in Dubai, UAE, where she served as Chair, Department of Humanities and Professor of Art History, Theory and Criticism.
“It is with deep sorrow that the faculty, staff, and students of @theafricainst of @GSUSharjah share the news of the passing of our dear colleague Professor Elizabeth Wolde Giorgis, who passed away in the early hours of March 16, 2025, in Sharjah, UAE,” The African Institute wrote on its twitter page.
Professor Elizabeth received a Ph.D. in the History of Art and Visual Studies from Cornell University (2010) and her Masters in Museum Studies from New York University (2004).

Sources told borkena that her body will be flown to Ethiopia.
