Toronto – At least 30 people have reportedly been killed in the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa, after a fire broke out in a neighborhood in the Habteghiorgis locality. An unspecified number of people were also injured in the incident.
The Ethiopian Media Service (EMS) cited local sources to report that the accident occurred last night. The fire affected shanty houses in the area, where dozens of destitute families reside.
The cause of the fire has not yet been determined, and the police have not released any official information about the incident. It remains unclear whether an investigation has been launched. Fire accidents have been a recurring issue in the capital for several years. There have been accusations in the past that the government may have been involved in some of these incidents, though no evidence has been provided to substantiate these claims.
The Addis Ababa City Administration has not yet issued a detailed statement regarding the latest fire incident in the city.
Adanech Abeibie, the Mayor of Addis Ababa, visited the scene of the devastating fire. Addis Ababa Fire and Disaster Prevention Commissioner Ahmed Mohammed stated that the accident occurred during the night. According to FBC, the fire broke out around 4:35 a.m. local time.
Commissioner Ahmed Mohammed cited two primary reasons for the severity of the fire: “the materials used to construct the houses and the inaccessibility of the neighborhood to vehicles.”
The report did not specify the number of casualties resulting from the fire.
Fana Broadcasting Corporation, a state-owned media outlet, reported that the fire damaged both residential houses and businesses. However, the extent of the damage, including the loss of human lives, remains unspecified in the state media reports.
