Ruling Party Secures Overwhelming Majority in Regional Parliament as Shimelis Abdisa Begins New Five-Year Term

(NAIROBI, Kenya ) — The Oromia Regional Council convened its 7th-term, 1st-year opening session, formally approving nominations for top executive and legislative leadership positions following the conclusion of the 7th general election. Following the governing Prosperity Party’s “electoral victory”, Oromia became the first regional state to formally establish a new government structure.
During the opening session, council members unanimously approved the nomination of Abduselam Wariyo as Speaker of the Regional Council. Official profiles highlight Abduselam’s 15 years of administrative experience across the Borena Zone, where he previously advanced from woreda-level leadership to zonal administrator. Abduselam officially assumed leadership of the regional legislature from outgoing Speaker Sa’ada Abdurahman.
The legislature also approved Zemzem Shala as Deputy Speaker. Zemzem, originally from Asella in the Arsi Zone, officially took her oath of office before the assembly.
Following the election of parliamentary speakers, the council re-elected Shimelis Abdisa to serve a five-year term as Regional President.
The council also approved structural adjustments within the regional executive leadership, replacing outgoing Deputy President Awelu Abdi. Council members elected Kefyalew Tefera, former head of the regional Prosperity Party branch office, as the new Deputy President and government representative in the council. Prior to managing regional party operations, Kefyalew held senior positions across federal entities, including the Information Network Security Agency and the Ministry of Peace.
In the regional legislative assembly, the ruling Prosperity Party secured approximately 99 percent of the 523 total seats. Opposition political groups securing representation in the council include Ethiopian Citizens for Social Justice (EZEMA).
