Toronto – The Oromo Liberation Army (OLA), a radical militant group that has been operating in Ethiopia’s Oromia region for over six years, this week reported what appears to be a significant military victory against government forces.
The operation took place in the West Shoa area of the region, within a range of less than 200 kilometers to the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa.
“In a major military operation today, OLA`s Central Command successfully neutralized an entire ENDF regiment in the Abuunaa Gindabaraati district, at Dhoqoonuu Suree and Gooroo Dhoqonuu. The operation resulted in 134 enemy casualties, 95 wounded, and 60 captured soldiers,” the group claimed in a news release on its social media page.
Furthermore, it stated that it had seized “substantial” firearms from government forces. “161 AKM rifles, 10 PKM machine guns, 5 sniper rifles, 2 DShK heavy machine guns, and a significant quantity of explosives and ammunition” were among the weapons the group claims to have captured.
Based on the group’s social media post, the military defeat allegedly triggered disagreements between the commander, Lt. General Zewdu Belay, and his subordinates.
Borkena has not independently verified the story. The OLA’s claim comes days after the Defense Force shared a post on social media displaying “captured” Shane—a term the government uses to refer to OLA forces.
OLA and the government have repeatedly exchanged accusations over widespread kidnappings and killings in Ethiopia’s Oromia region. The OLA, which operates extensively in the area, has been linked to rampant ransom kidnappings as well as the massacre of tens of thousands of ethnic Amhara civilians. However, the group denies both allegations and has been calling for an independent investigation.
