Toronto – 135 Eritreans who have been living in Norway for over 8 years are reportedly facing Norwegian citizenship revocation.
According to a BBC Amharic report, which cited online sources, the government has been undertaking investigation mainly in Oslo and Bergen cities over alleged support to the Eritrean government.
It appears the investigation started about two years ago following a clash between a group that calls itself Birged Nehamdu which opposes the Eritrean government and the supporters of the Eritrean government.
Apart from those facing loss of citizenship, so far 20 Eritreans have lost residence permits and 30 others are “under investigation” over support to the Eritrean government.
It is unclear as to what kind of support they have been given to the Eritrean government. There does not seem to be a law in Norway that prohibits ethnic communities from supporting their government.
The Government of Norway seems to be standing on the ground that those under investigation claimed to have suffered rights abuse in Eritrea, including compulsory military service, when they were seeking asylum in Norway but they later supported the government.
The Norwegian Directorate of Immigration is saying, according to the source, that the claims of forced military service, rights abuse and arrest were “incorrect.”
The Government of Norway has a law that residence permit or citizenship could be revoked in the event of false claims.
The Norwegian Directorate of Immigration is expected to look into appeal cases in the coming new year, based on a BBC Amharic news report published Friday.
The government of Eritrea has been under sanctions for over 20 years. In the past few years, groups organized under the name “Biegede Nehamdu” had been confronting Eritrean government supporters in many cities across Europe and North America.
There had been reported death as a result of it and many cases of injuries – apparently from both sides.
In a related development, Israel has reportedly deported an Eritrean man who allegedly entered the country illegally. He was also said to be a supporter of the Eritrean government.
Despite recent cases of resistance, it is noticeable that the Eritrean government has considerable support in the country and abroad.
