The Amhara National Movement alleges targeted violence and displacement by the Tigray Peace Force in contested Raya, while TPF categorically denies the accusations

NAIROBI, Kenya — The Amhara National Movement (NAMA) issued a formal statement alleging that an armed faction operating as the “Tigray Peace Force” (TPF) has engaged in targeted violence, forced displacement, and identity-based intimidation against residents in the contested Raya area.
NAMA asserted that the group emerged amid shifting military control following the withdrawal of the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) from specific sectors. According to the political party, TPF combatants opened fire on returning displaced civilians and community leaders in Alamata, Bala, and Korem, actively obstructing internally displaced persons from returning home.
NAMA further accused the TPF of launching attacks against local peacekeeping structures and deliberately blocking civilian transport carrying women and children on Oct. 3, 2026, stranding non-combatants within active shelling zones. The party additionally alleged that the group has imposed administrative control over local institutions in urban areas and restricted Amharic-language instruction in public schools. Calling for federal intervention, NAMA urged the deployment of national security forces to secure the area, facilitate unconditional civilian returns, and enable independent human rights investigations.
In response, the Tigray Peace Force categorically rejected the allegations. Mengistuab Tesfaye, head of the group’s media sector, stated that the organization has not detained, pursued, or targeted civilian populations in the region. Describing the assertions as unfounded, the representative maintained that the group operates with local community acceptance and emphasized that its activities have focused on facilitating the peaceful surrender and integration of former combatants rather than carrying out retaliatory actions.
