Toronto – Amhara Fano Forces Gondar Command on Monday announced that it took control of Metema – a town along the Ethio-Sudanese border. It appears that the forces controlled it on Sunday.

Sudanese news sources have confirmed the development. According to Sudan Tribune, Sudanese Authorities in Al-Qadarif state a border closure to Ethiopia starting Sunday.

Based on the source, there was a communication between Fano forces and Sudanese authorities in the region to make arrangements for Sudanese citizens who were reportedly stranded in the area to “cross to Ethiopia” and for disarmed Ethiopian Federal Police and members of the defense force to cross to Sudan – apparently to seek asylum.

The Ethiopian government has not remarked about the situation at this writing.

Metema is one of the access points through which the Amhara region gets supplies including fuel.  Fano forces are in control of most  of the Amhara region.

The situation in the rest of the Amhara region

In the latest string of announcements, Abiy Ahmed’s government declared a “final campaign” to neutralize Fano forces from the Amhara region by mid September.

It does not appear to be feasible given reported development in the region that Fano forces are gaining more ground and training more troops.

Latest Anchor Media report with Asres Mare, head of the political division of Gojjam Fano, revealed that Fano is engaged in extensive training for forces which are said to have both a military and political dimension.

Fano forces are also undertaking administrative tasks in the areas they control. Engaging the public with the aim to address grievances and  security concerns including kidnapping and looting are also underway.

The fighting against government forces is still underway in many parts of the Amhara region.

Recent development in Somalia with the deployment of Egyptian forces pressured the Ethiopian government to make arrangements to respond to the situation.

The government has been making several attempts to end the Fano movement in the region which turned out to be unsuccessful. It remains a question whether Abiy Ahmed’s government could even avert a total take over of Fano forces in the region let alone to eliminate them.

  1. How can you claim to capture your own town, your own territories? These are places where you live, among your own people. Instead of choosing dialogue and peaceful solutions, Fano forces have opted for violence, looting, and causing chaos, only to turn around and blame the government for the very destruction they are responsible for.

Fano and their ardent supporters don’t seem to grasp what it means to oppose a government constructively. Their actions are not about liberation or justice; they are about creating instability and exploiting the current situation for their own misguided ambitions. They seem to be under the illusion that they can challenge the government’s armed forces, but the reality is that they are far from capable of taking on even a single battalion.

Moreover, the recent deployment of Egyptian forces in Somalia is not a game-changer that Fano can exploit to their advantage. Those who claim to be the ultimate patriots of Ethiopia are, in reality, opening the door to foreign enemies who want to see Ethiopia weakened. It’s a disgraceful betrayal of the country they claim to defend. Instead of rallying behind destructive fantasies, it’s time for them to recognize the damage they’re doing and seek a path of unity and peace for Ethiopia.

  2. Sources in the Tigray defense force also confirm that the Oromo dominated army is losing to the Amhara forces and thousands are killed and surrendering. According to these sources, the absence of Eritrean army officers who led the war in Tigray is the main cause for the defeat of the government forces. The government army lacks competent and battle hardened officers at all levels is facing defeat in the Amhara region.
