NAIROBI, Kenya — Ethiopia-born Democratic Socialist Melat Kiros has secured a surprise victory in the Democratic Party primary election in Denver, defeating longtime Congresswoman Diana DeGette, who had held office for 30 years. The win marks a significant development for the first-time candidate and is seen as a boost for progressive Democrats across the United States.

Melat’s victory came in a congressional district that covers the entire city of Denver.

The result follows a week in which progressive candidates in New York City also recorded primary wins, contributing to a broader wave of support for left-wing activists seeking greater representation within the Democratic Party. As a result, Melat is expected to join a growing group of Democratic Socialists and lawmakers who have been critical of Israel’s military actions in Congress.

However, some Jewish leaders and organizations in Colorado have expressed concerns about Melat Kiros’ political positions.

The Times of Israel reported that she faced criticism, particularly over comments describing the October 7 Hamas attack as “inevitable” and for not characterizing the Boulder bombing as anti-semitic.

Israeli media outlets also noted that Melat has made opposition to Israel and its relationship with the United States a central part of her campaign. Her policy platform includes calls to end all U.S. arms sales to Israel and to discontinue military assistance to the country.

In her victory speech, Melat told supporters, who cheered loudly, “To end the politics of the past, we will not hesitate to strongly oppose the political funding of big companies and the influence of AIPAC.”

She also said she would work to challenge President Donald Trump and move to abolish Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), adding, “We will not wait at all to stop the genocide taking place in Palestine,” according to reports from Israeli media outlets.

The Institute for Middle East Understanding Policy Project, which advocates for Palestinian rights, praised Melat’s position, stating that her election to Congress “is a major confirmation of how much the country has changed over the past two years.”

  1. Democratic Socialist? Excuse me! Democratic socialism? What? Where did that come from and when did it happen? I remember what Enver Hoxha told a western journalist when the reporter told him that socialism was tried in the Soviet Union and it had failed in all its aspects and Red China was charting new paths. Hoxha told him those countries were using it the wrong way but his Albania was on the correct path. Well, well, well! I also remember reading a piece in which the then TPLF leader was telling his horde and the confused leftist world that his brand of Marxism/Leninism was the Albanian style. It did not take him and his cabals to start talking about ‘market economy’ and he did not have the chance to tell his idol in Tirana that he has discovered a new path called ‘developmental democracy’ because by then Hoxha was dead and gone. Some of you could be old enough to remember how our leftist elites were fiercely divided along the stupid line of ‘two world and three world’. They even start calling their 2nd father Soviet Union ‘revisionist’. Back in the old country they were killing each other like savages from the Stone Age along those lines. Some of them you still can see them chicken scratching on Diaspora websites. They still have it clinging to and swearing by their demonic verses of ‘dialectic and historical materialism’. It is like the old adage; ‘you can’t teach old dogs new trick’.

And now we have this who seems to have been spoon-fed with ideology that has been proven beyond the benefit of a doubt to be so bankrupt. I hope she will behave in Congress if she wins the General Election. I hope she will keep in mind those countrymen/women who make honest living by working hard 16-18 hours everyday.

  2. Why should the welfare of Israel be the litmus test for representatives American people elect? Why is concern of Muslim Americans, Arab-, Native-, Black-, etc Americans not given priority? The interests of Americans should come first, right? Israel is a foreign nation. Americans have to worry about housing, healthcare, student loan, gun violence, techno oligarchs robbing them dry, democratic institutions, jobs, retirement fund, etc. No, not about violent Israel. No, not about corrupt Democrats and Republicans.
