Toronto – The Ethiopian Prime Minister on Tuesday led a delegation to Kazan, Russia to attend the BRICS Summit. Ethiopia was accepted to BRICS membership as of January this year months after the Block invited the country to join.
Established in 2006, by Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, BRICS member countries now reportedly constitute over 43 percent of the World Population and over 35 percent of the world economy.
This year, Russia has a chairmanship of the Block and has organized several other meetings at the ministerial and financial sector leaders levels. Ethiopia has been participating in all of the meetings virtually and in person.
Russia has been pushing for a new world order based on a multi-polar world rather than one that is dominated by the United States. Dedollarization has also been one of the key agenda items. Growing number of countries within the block including China and Russia are now using their own national currencies to settle payments in their trade relations. Member states aim to end dependence on the U.S. dollars on claims that the United States has weaponized it.
The Ethiopian government has been painting membership to the bloc as a remarkable diplomatic achievement.
Ethiopian PM Abiy Ahmed shared on his page a message from his speech at the BRICS meeting in Kazan. He stated :
“Our nation, now the third-largest economy in Sub-Saharan Africa, is endowed with a young and dynamic workforce, vast arable land, and abundant renewable energy resources. These assets present unparalleled opportunities for investment and trade, and our ongoing macroeconomic reforms have unlocked new avenues for growth.”
Abiy Ahmed has also met with United Arab Emirates President, Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed bin , whom he calls “my brother,” on the sidelines of the summit, as disclosed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ethiopia. However, details of their conversation were unspecified.
As well, Abiy met with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian “for a discussion on bilateral and regional issues,” as the ministry disclosed. One of the issues he raised during the discussion was the tension between Iran and Israel.
He stated, “I expressed that Ethiopia stands ready to support de-escalate tensions in the Middle East, on the margins of the ongoing 16th BRICS Summit in Kazan, Russia.”

I wish we had a better Prime Minister than Abiy. This is a good chance for us but he will probably mess it up. Also his team looks clueless.
