Toronto – Ethiopian News Agency, state-owned media, on Thursday aired a short clip from what appears to be an interview with U.S. Ambassador to Ethiopia, Ervin Massinga.
The remark is unambiguous and straight forward. Within the context of Ethiopia’s growing economy and the need for access, he remarked that his country – the United States of America – supports Ethiopia’s quest for maritime access for commercial purposes. He was also clear that it is supported so long as it is in a peaceful way. This position is pretty similar with that of Eritrea’s position.
However, the way his remark is framed in the Amharic coverage is as if the U.S supports “Ethiopia’s effort to get sea access.” Notably, what is missing is that what is supported is a peaceful effort.
The relation between Ethiopia and Eritrea has reached a breaking point. Fears are high that the two countries could go to war.
