Is Internal Power Struggle Consuming Fano, Posing Dangerous Risk to Amhara Movement?

Borkena

Toronto – The Fano movement is described by many as a lucky movement seen from the trajectory of unprecedented and massive grassroot support in the Amhara region and beyond.

It appears that mounting civilian casualties outside of combat areas in the region – as seen from Enarj Enawuga drone strike last week where more than 120 civilians were killed – is seen a deliberate action on the part of the government. Activists from the region , and some in the opposition quarter, tend to see it as an effort to put a wedge between Fano forces and people in the region so that that latter would rethink support and/or end it. Clearly, that is not happening at this point – based on multiple of reports from local sources.

Yet, the Fano forces have been under increasing criticism for failure to form a single united and disciplined force focused on toppling Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s government – whom the fano forces see as an existential threat to ethnic Amhara.

The core reason for the failure is a notable power struggle – particularly between Zemene Kassie and Eskinder Nega groups.

While there are views among some Fano leaders that a protracted war would weaken the government, there are also those who think otherwise. People in the region are said to be already exhausted. Economic activity is essentially non-existent. Over four million students are out of school. And the humanitarian crisis is worsening in the region.

Andargachew Tsege, a politician once led the now defunct Ginbot 7-Arbegnoch Ginbar, is among those who think that the struggle should not be taking years and years.

“Fano failed to come up with a strategy to make the struggle short,” he said in a way rejecting the presumed merit of an extended armed struggle. He sees elements that are causing problems in the Fano movement and also potential Prosperity Party infiltration.
