TORONTO, Canada — The ICRC on Monday announced that it has evacuated 161 persons from the Mekelle Tigray region of Ethiopia and transferred them to Semera, the Afar region of Ethiopia.
It appears authorities in the Tigray region approved it.
“On Monday, 28 September, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in Ethiopia transferred altogether 161 persons out of conflict-affected Tigray, acting as a neutral and independent intermediary, based on the request and approval of all authorities concerned,” the ICRC wrote in an article it published on its own site.
Buses with ICRC emblems were used to transport them and ICRC staff accompanied the buses.
Members of the Ethiopian Federal Police and their family members, Ethiopian Airlines staff who were posted in the region and their family members, civil aviation security personnel, African Union monitors and members of the Ethiopian Red Cross Society were among those evacuated.
It is unspecified as to how long will the evacuees stay in Semera before heading to their places
The Federal police and Ethiopian Airlines staff were detained in Mekelle after the TPLF forces took control of three airports last week – a development that escalated the conflict..
The battle fronts are expanded to the Afar area while the conflict in the Amhara region is further intensified.
The ICRC expressed commitment that it “will continue to engage with parties to the conflict and stay ready whenever vulnerable people are concerned and all parties agree to such operations in the future.”
