(Nairobi, Kenya) — The Gogot Party for Gurage Unity and Justice (Gogot) issued on Tuesday an official policy statement demanding that the military Command Post operating across West and East Gurage zones strip political influence from its operations and prioritize civilian security.

In its press declaration, the opposition party called for urgent law enforcement measures to neutralize security threats across both zones. Gogot urged regional state authorities to hold administrative officials and security forces legally accountable for failing to intervene during recent violent attacks against civilians.

The party demanded intensified security deployment along major commercial corridors, particularly entrance and exit routes around Welkite town. Gogot urged an immediate end to illegal detentions, highway ambushes, and property looting targeting traders and residents. Furthermore, the statement called on authorities to identify and prosecute illegal armed elements in all woredas, establish an independent investigative body to probe past extrajudicial killings and property destruction, and deliver state compensation to affected families.

Addressing long-term governance, Gogot recommended that authorities progressively transfer the Command Post’s temporary mandate to regular zonal and woreda police forces alongside formal judicial bodies. The party called on federal and regional officials to maintain transparent public communication during security crises while leveraging “Joka”—the traditional Gurage community conflict-resolution institution—and local elders to foster reconciliation.

Gogot emphasized that officials must resolve boundary and administrative disputes with neighboring areas strictly through constitutional frameworks and public dialogue rather than armed force, while delivering immediate humanitarian assistance to displaced populations and economic support to local youth.
