NAIROBI, Kenya — A Ghanaian national has reportedly been killed in South Africa during anti-immigrant protests, sparking diplomatic friction between the two countries. On Tuesday, people opposed to immigrants—especially from other African nations—gathered in public areas in many cities. They were demanding that African migrants leave South Africa.

The Ghanaian government confirmed the death in Cape Town, lodged an official complaint, and reported the incident to the police. However, the South African Justice Minister said that Ghanaian officials were sharing false information about undocumented migrants.

South African police stated they did not have any information about a Ghanaian being killed in the protests, but were looking into the killing of another Ghanaian connected to crime. South African Foreign Ministry official Clayson Monyela told the BBC that claims about the Ghanaian being killed during the protests were “made-up stories.”

In a statement, Ghana said: “Taking any human life is a serious crime, and those responsible must be held accountable quickly.” The Foreign Ministry also asked South Africa to conduct a full, clear, and fast investigation to ensure those responsible are arrested and punished.

A Ghanaian radio station reported the victim had lived in South Africa for about 20 years, worked as a tailor, and was shot by protesters. The Ghanaian Foreign Ministry is currently trying to bring his body back to Ghana.

Last Tuesday, anti-immigrant protesters set a deadline for African migrants to leave South Africa, and protests took place in several cities. Ghana, Malawi, and Nigeria are among the countries that have repatriated some of their citizens ahead of the deadline. So far, around 25,000 people have left South Africa.
