NAIROBI, Kenya — At least 13 people have died in Accra following severe flooding, according to Ghana’s Fire and Disaster Prevention Service.

Residents have been advised to remain indoors or move to higher ground as heavy rain and storm conditions from the eastern part of the country are expected to continue.

Although water levels from Sunday’s rainfall are gradually receding, officials warned that the death toll could rise.

Low-lying areas remain at risk. Social media videos show homes and vehicles being swept away by floodwaters, with buildings also damaged.

Emergency teams, including police and firefighters, have been deployed to affected areas.

The Ministry of the Interior said response teams are monitoring the situation and working to protect lives and property. So far, 470 people have been evacuated to safety. The floods also triggered a fire at a plastic factory in Accra.
