Toronto – Eskinder Yirga, who was recently appointed as Ethiopia’s Ambassador to Germany, has this week presented credentials to Frank-Walter Steinmeier, president of Germany.
The President “warmly welcomed the Ambassador and assured him of the German government’s full support in facilitating his duties and fostering the bilateral cooperation between the two nations,” said a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ethiopia.
Ambassador Eskinder has reportedly outlined his diplomatic mission priorities but the Ministry of Foreign Affairs did not specify them. Ethiopia has also committed to “strengthen” relations with Germany, a country that has long been a development partner.
Germany has recently named Jens Hanefeld as Ambassador-designate to Ethiopia. The diplomatic relation between the two countries is older than a century.
Germany funds various development programs in the country. It also supports other initiatives. In September 2024, the Government of Germany announced a €4 million funding which was released to the United Nations Development Program in support of peace programs in Afar, Amhara and Tigray regions of Ethiopia.
And this month, Germany unveiled €56.5 million to support what Abiy Ahmed’s government packaged as “home grown economic reform.”
