Toronto – Assegid Mekonnen, one of the most influential Fano leaders in Shewa with a huge combatant force, reportedly “surrendered” to the government forces.
The news came just a day after writing in Amharic in his name was circulated on social media in which he called for Unity and spoke in an optimistic tone about the inevitable victory of the Fano forces.
A story that the Ethiopian Defense Force shared has a different tone, and there is speculation that Assegid’s might have been captured with arrangements from sold-out elements from within.
“Amhara Fano Shewa Command main commander Colonel Assegid Mekonen surrendered today to government security forces…,” Stated the update from the Defense Force which was shared on a social media page.
It cited the National Intelligence and Security Task Force as a source.
Further, the Defense force cited the Task Force as saying “Many armed groups and leaders in the Amhara region are accepting government calls and leading ‘peaceful’ lives. ”
The task force seems to take the incident as a propaganda input in a way avoiding celebration – while what happened is unconfirmed by other sources – to paint the image that Fano is divided and the struggle is derailed.
“Due to division over tribalism and money, many of the armed groups and the group’s leaders are in acrimony and trying to eliminate one another which harmed the mission of the struggle…” said the Task Force.
Assegid appeared in Fano Broadcasting Corporate, a state media, on Monday.
“I am Assegin Mekonnen Engdawork. My main profession is author and journalist. …Obviously I am a Fano leader. I surrendered in the morning around 2 o’clock [8:am. local time] …since then we have been in Kombolcha … other than that I can say that our country has changed..” he said. The video footage appears to be doctored.
Assegid also said he was treated in a friendly way until he arrived in Addis Ababa. After I arrived here, he added, I was given a nice room and offered tea and food.
Although, from his appearance on Fana TV, he does not seem to be in a panic; he seems to be speaking under duress. He was made to talk about division within Fano.
He also said that “the force that is operating the front in Shewa attempted an invasion on me in Majete.”
Information is emerging from sources that appear to have links to Fano. They all confirm that he did not surrender. He gave orders to his junior commanders on a mission on Sunday.
There has been an internet shutdown in the Amhara region since August 2023 and was restored only last week.
Borkena will update readers as more information becomes available regarding how he ended up under government forces.

I am very happy that this leader might have brought many young fighters with him. Those young people now under the spell of bigots and connivers both in Oromia and Amhara regions don’t deserve to be wandering around aimlessly in the wilderness. Just like my grandchildren and your children/grandchildren they belong to schools. I have said this umpteen times before. In this day and age there is no historical justification to the idea that democracy will can be brewed with guns and sticks. Never has been and never will be. What armed struggle has produced is an endless list bloodthirsty and murderous despots. If you need proof, what you have to do is look to your left and then look to your right.
