Toronto – Intense clashes erupted on Wednesday between Fano forces and the Ethiopian Defense Force in Shewa Robit, located in North Shewa, Amhara region.
Multiple local Ethiopian news outlets reported on the battle, though the number of casualties on both sides remains unclear.
Confirmed reports indicate that government forces retreated from Shewa Robit following an hours-long engagement.
According to Ethiopian Media Service (EMS), the fighting began around 4 a.m. and continued until midday. Fano Adonay Abebe, identified as the head of media and communications for Amhara Fano Shoa Teklay Gizat, confirmed the developments during an EMS interview.
Video footage circulating on social media on Wednesday purportedly shows Fano forces entering Shewa Robit from four directions.
Shewarobit lies along the Addis Ababa–Dessie–Mekelle road, a strategic route that has witnessed recurring clashes between government forces and Fano fighters.
The town has also been the site of alleged extrajudicial killings by government forces, targeting youths accused of supporting Fano. Some of the extrajudicial killings were confirmed by human rights organizations in the country.
Elsewhere in the Amhara region, battles were reported in Ambasel (South Wollo), Gojjam, and Gondar.
In Gondar, local sources revealed that a government military operation aimed at controlling a strategic corridor to the Sudanese border has stalled. Solomon Atanaw, a prominent Fano leader from North Gondar, spoke to EMS and described the current strategy as primarily ambush-based attacks.
Despite government efforts, Fano forces reportedly maintain control over large parts of the Amhara region. The government’s latest military campaign to neutralize the Fano forces was expected to conclude by the end of the month, but Fano remains entrenched in key areas. The group draws extensive grassroot support in the region and beyond.
The government has intensified drone strikes as part of its campaign. The latest strike occurred in Bilbila, Lalibela, on Tuesday night around 11 p.m., reportedly killing several civilians, including an 80-year-old woman.
The Ethiopian government has yet to confirm or deny these reports of drone attacks.
