Toronto – It is not uncommon in Ethiopian history for fathers to take their son to battle to fight enemy forces along with them. It was definitely recorded during the second Italian invasion of Ethiopia which triggered five years of Fano resistance.
The story of Dereje Belay, who is a fano combatant in the Gonder area – Amhara region of Ethiopia, is reminiscent of Ethiopian Patriotism.
He lost two of his sons – also fano combatants -during a combat operation in Gonder.
Ethiopian Media Service (EMS) said it had spoken to Fano Dereje Belay but he declined to speak about the loss of his sons. “Fano fighters who are paying sacrifice are also my sons. I can not talk about my sons. It means nothing,” he said.
