European Union Calls for Immediate De-Escalation and Protection of Civilians Amid Expanding Conflict in Northern Ethiopia

(Nairobi, Kenya) — The European Union released an official statement expressing grave concern regarding the rapidly deteriorating situation across northern Ethiopia, warning of its severe impact on civilian populations amid expanding military movements.
European diplomatic officials highlighted that military activity across multiple localities—notably including Tigray People’s Liberation Front forces seizing control of regional airports in Mekelle, Axum, and Shire—has significantly heightened regional instability.
European authorities noted that they have been closely monitoring a series of drone strikes conducted in recent weeks.
The statement called for an immediate de-escalation of military operations, emphasizing that it is not too late for all involved parties to decisively recommit to the Permanent Cessation of Hostilities Agreement. Stressing that political differences can only be resolved through structured dialogue rather than military action, European officials declared that adherence to International Humanitarian Law—specifically protecting civilians and respecting the neutrality and independence of aid operations—remains imperative and non-negotiable.
The European Union firmly condemned airstrikes targeting humanitarian convoys as well as any deliberate acts denying humanitarian access to vulnerable communities. Reaffirming its position on regional peace, the European Union declared its continued commitment to supporting de-escalation efforts, African Union-led mediation processes, and meaningful diplomatic dialogue.
